Maxime Aulio

Maxine Aulio is a transgender composer and conductor, born in Chartres, France, in 1980. She began her studies of organ at a young age but soon took interest in percussion, harpsichord, then french horn, instrument she studied and graduated at the Conservatory of Toulouse, France. Then, she studied at the Lemmens School of Arts (Lemmensinstituut) in Leuven, Belgium, where she graduated in 2006 with a Master in Music in wind composition and wind orchestra conducting.

Maxine Aulio is a self-taught and versatile composer. Her list of works includes items for soloist(s) and wind orchestra as well as compositions for chamber ensembles, symphonic orchestra, or film music. Interested in wind orchestra history and its french military origins, she succeeded in 2008 a contest to be Military Conductor, an activity she assured until 2013 at the Principal Wind Band of French Army. 2017 to 2021, she taught conducting, orchestration and repertoire to the new recruited military conductors (positioned in the ground, air or marine forces) and foreign military conductors from Africa.

Selected for a DMA in Wind Conducting at the University of North Texas (USA) in 2015, then teaching orchestra, conducting and chamber music at the Conservatory of Tours (France), she continues to give time to compose new commissions, especially for wind ensembles, and gives time to to the French Association for Symphonic Bands (AFEEV) to promote the french repertoire.

In the meantime, she regularly participates as an adjudicator in many different events: professional national diplomas for instrumentalists, amateur wind bands regional contests (for the French confederation of amateur orchestras), instrumental and theory exams in several conservatories, composition/orchestration exams/contests,… (e.g. jury for the international composition competition of Belfort, France, in 2019, or jury for the European Championships for Wind Orchestras ECWO in 2023)

2021 to 2025, she is professor of Wind Conducting at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Portugal). Starting 2025, she teaches composition and orchestration in that same university.
